"Bad anaesthetics attitude in labour"

About: Maternity care / Labour Suite Maternity care / Maternity & Paediatric Theatres

(as a service user),

My midwife would not give me any pain relief during my induced labour so I asked for an epidural in the labour ward. The anaesthetist who saw me seemed quite dismissive of my pain when I was in uterine hyper stimulation which the nurses didn’t identify until after  the epidural was put in. The pain relief didn’t work for 45 minutes and the pump giving the pain relief was faulty and so I wasn’t receiving any when pressing on the button. Due to baby being so sick with it we were told we had to have c section which was really scary and all very rushed. The added pain relief to numb me then numbed my arms too and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. Not being able to hold my baby when she was born was heart breaking to me.

The anaesthetic doctors did not take any responsibility or apologise for this, I was just told it sometimes happens. It really seemed like they weren’t interested in women’s care or a part of the team.

The two anaesthetists spoke really loudly through the whole procedure which was also quite upsetting.
