The care we received from the transplant team of Dr. Ewins, Andy, Craig, Drs Jacob, Shazzy, Liam & the incredible nursing team was second to none.
Conversely, it must be noted that we honestly have never experienced such poor quality food than that which is served daily in the hospital. It is completely processed, reheated food. Of absolutely dreadful quality.
While this standard of food might be tolerable for a couple of days, for patients and parents like us here for 6 weeks plus it is simply stomach churning.
Our (lengthy) experience of hospitals prior to transplant is of freshly cooked, wholesome food from hospital kitchens. Food which has the potential to assist in the patient’s recovery and fuel the carer on this gruelling journey.
It’s also very disappointing for parents/carers like us (of long term patients on transplant/ oncology) that the parents kitchen is so under resourced.
On a daily basis, there are -
*No plates, bowls or cutlery
*One sink for both handwashing and dish washing
*No dishwasher
*No toaster
In our lengthy experience of oncology wards prior to transplant there has always been a fully stocked kitchen for parents/ carers with bread, milk, cereal for parents/ carers who often only have minutes where they can leave a sick child’s side.
When this was discussed with the Nurse Manager, infection control was cited as the reason for everything. However, we have heard that the parents kitchen in the cardiac ward upstairs does indeed have all the basic essentials for long term patients and carers.
It’s hard to fathom how infection control is not comparable on different floors of the same hospital.
"Excellent clinical care but poor quality food"
