"Staff went above and beyond"

About: West Cumberland Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

Our baby was recently born at West Cumberland Infirmary. The unit was very busy at the time which resulted in a delay to our induction. However, throughout the wait and on attending the antenatal ward we were listened to, kept informed and our needs were met with care and kindness.

During the labour process our desire for minimal medical intervention was respected, accommodated and encouraged by doctors and midwives alike. Again we felt safe and listened to, with encouragement and support offered when needed.

The modern facilities also provided an environment that felt private and calm, with birthing ball, adjustable lighting and other birthing support devices immediately available. And we really appreciated the fact that my husband was able to remain with me throughout our hospital stay.

After our baby's birth, complications led to the need for additional medical and surgical intervention. During this urgent and worrying time, and the ongoing treatment that followed, the care we received continued to be excellent. We were reassured, well informed and kept safe during each step of our journey. We have also been offered several opportunities to reflect on what happened and to have our questions answered.

Throughout our birth experience at West Cumberland Hospital maternity unit we were treated with respect, kindness, compassion and professionalism by all of the staff we encountered. Staff went above and beyond on various occasions! We were afforded privacy and were given information and time, with both parents always included and a member of staff always on hand when needed. It is clear from the many members of staff that we encountered that domestic staff, health care support workers, students, midwives and doctors work closely and collaboratively together in what appears to be a strong and happy team to deliver a consistently high level of care.

We would absolutely recommend this unit, and would like to thank the wonderful team for safely and warmly guiding us through a challenging few days, and ensuring that we all went home safe and sound, and feeling positive about our birth experience!

Dear Islanders

Firstly, congratulations on the arrival of your baby.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback relating to your recent birth experience. The trust and services really value feedback whether positive or negative, but it is nice to read that your experience was so positive especially at a urgent and worrying time for you.

Your feedback has been shared with the Ward Manager, Matron and Director of Midwifery with a request to share with the staffing team.

I hope you are settling in well at home with your new baby.

kind regards

Sylvia
