"The level of care I was given made such a difference"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Early Pregnancy Assessment Service University Hospital Wishaw / Gynaecology (Ward 13) University Hospital Wishaw / Theatres, Recovery & Anaesthetics

(as the patient),

Unfortunately I was having a miscarriage at the end of June and after blood tests and scans it was a confirmed ectopic pregnancy. The scan revealed I had some bleeding in my fallopian tube and the consultants came to me and said that surgery would be the best option. I was devastated as this was worst case scenario for me and it also meant I had to have a short stay in hospital. I was taken for emergency surgery the following day and although I was terrified and extremely upset throughout the whole time I was in the hospital, the level of care I was given made such a difference.

In particular the anaesthetist, Lewis, was exceptional and put my mind at ease when he came to see me before surgery by explaining everything thoroughly and answering all of my questions. His confidence in his work and the way he conducted himself made me truly know I was in safe hands. He was such an angel when I really needed that reassurance and I was so grateful to be under his care.

Another absolute angel was a midwife called Eleanor. I was put on the Labour Ward the night before the surgery as the Gynaecology Ward was full which everyone was very apologetic about given my circumstances. But I actually didn’t mind as there was a lot going on and this is where Eleanor was looking after me. Her beside manner alone made me instantly feel at ease. She genuinely made me feel so much better with the way she was empathetic, sensitive and understanding and the level of care she provided was outstanding. I was only with her for a few hours but she made such a difference and Wishaw Maternity are so lucky to have her.

Dr Minhas who performed the surgery and Yasmin the Gynaecology Doctor were both incredible at their job and made a difficult situation better.

Sheena the anaesthetic nurse and another nurse whose name I didn’t get were incredible, and the lady who held my hand as I was put the sleep, which I will never forget.
