After a recent operation at Ninewells, the wound became infected and the hospital sent a prescription for antibiotics to my GP practice in Perth. The practice refused to action it, saying they had to wait for seven days; so I had to drive to Ninewells to pick it up myself. Ninewells had never heard of the compulsory seven day delay, which apparently is imposed on all such prescriptions.
The best that can be said is that I was not especially happy.
The only way, apparently, that the seven day delay can be overlooked is if the prescription is marked urgent. But if nobody knows what the system is, or if a patient is unable to reach Ninewells from Perth, the possibility of an adverse outcome is significant.
I understand that the seven day delay is to allow local pharmacists to check the prescription before it is issued. Why?
