"Bowel Screening - a normal thing right?"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

So the normal package arrived through the post. I had been away with work and it had sat by the side for a couple weeks. The wife reminded me about the test, as I’d just got back from working at elevation and in high heat. This work had been 3 weeks long and long days.

I had missed a couple of calls, because I was driving. The following day I called back and spoke to a very nice lady, who explained why I was receiving the call. Why was I getting this call, 4 days after posting my sample.  Because blood had been found in the sample. I had not seen any blood, my movements were the same, I felt the same.

On that call the nice lady had rearranged an appointment for 1 week later, when I would get a call to explain what was going to happen next, check medical history and talk through the procedure.

During the call with the nurse, all the checks were asked and boxes ticked. Procedure explained in detail.  It there was one question, that she was unable to answer for me. Where was the blood from?

I did the same as most people nowadays, went and asked the question of goggle doctor. I tell others not too, for the very same reason I found. I couldn’t make head nor tails of what I was reading.

Well,  I had my procedure, and I tell you what, the staff were amazing. The procedure was painless, well not painful, just one bit of discomfort. I had also harken the anaesthetic option.

So air blown, water squirted and camera snaked around my bowel. Two polyps were found, both were removed and one sent off for further analysis.

I then went to recovery and had observations taken. The nurse was chatty and explained how to move forward for the next 24 hours. I then went to the reception area and was treated with a cup of tea and toast. Both tasted amazing, after nil by mouth for 24hours.

I’m home now and feel great. No ill effects from the procedure and the whole process from the phone call to procedure, has been quick, simple and very easy.

My only bit of wisdom I will pass on. After visiting the toilet a few times over the last 24 hours. You may have a bit of discomfort from the passing and cleaning. Grab yourself a tube of lip balm. Tried and tasted in some very harsh environments. It provides instant relief

Dear bowel to clear,

Thank you for your kind post regarding your recent visit to the regional endoscopy unit at QMH. The Bowel Screening Programme is designed to pick up any discrepencies within the bowel especially if you don't visibly see blood in your poo! A number of pre-procedure checks need to be undertaken to ensure you get the correct treatment as you have experienced in your own journey.

It was nice to hear that you found the staff reassuring and you felt welcomed to the department and were kept informed throughout.

I am glad you enjoyed the tea and toast and feel well after your procedure.

I will pass on your kind words to the team.

Many thanks

Yvonne
