"Ensured he had the best care and we were supported"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Specialist Palliative Care Team Antrim Area Hospital / The Macmillan Unit District Nursing / District Nursing - Antrim North

(as a carer),

My husband took acutely unwell and required hospital treatment for 6 weeks. He then got home for 5 nights and then was re admitted to hospital.

Unfortunately he passed away 9 days later. In the time he was at home he was attended by district nurses and out of hours GP. All professionals encountered were very dedicated and compassionate. The district nurses were a fantastic support to both myself and my children. Nothing was a bother. They went above and beyond to ensure my husband had the best care and we as a family were supported.

My husband also availed of the specialist palliative care team in Antrim Area Hospital and the MacMillan unit. Everyone we encountered was incredible. Their empathy and emotional support. I feel myself and my children would be in a very different place if we had not had the support of these people. The MacMillan unit - I am in awe of the work they do.

Dear blackbirdcx33

I'm Marion Orr, District Nursing Coach in the Northern Trust. I work alongside all the District Nursing teams, including the District Nursing teams based in Antrim and Randalstown, to ensure that people in our care receive quality nursing care of a high standard.

Thank-you so much for providing this feedback during such an emotive and difficult time following the death of your husband. I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to you and your children and trust that you are finding support at this time.

District Nursing place particular importance on providing a high standard of palliative care in the patient's own home taking into consideration the needs of the family as well. I have shared your feedback with one of the District Nurses and plan to contact the other District Nurses involved. It has already provided motivation and a sense of pride as they continue their work in this area.

It is also reassuring that the service from our colleagues in the Macmillan unit was also of a high quality, as this also gives us all a sense of pride in our Trust and our Trust values.

Thank-you sincerely

Marion
