"There are some outstanding individuals"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital Daisy Hill Hospital / Emergency Department Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as the patient),

I was taken to the above hospital by an Ambulance team, the leader was male and was training a female member of the ambulance team. He was excellent. Although, I felt like I was passing out, he was completely in control and had a calm manner about the situation. Unfortunately I didn’t get his name. I hope you will be able to find out and thank him from the bottom of my heart. I feel like he saved my life!

I was taken to the ED Amber department and was looked after an amazing nurse called Olivia. She is an extremely competent and capable nurse.

Later, I was taken to the Green area, the nurse that was outstanding is called Eimer. She explained everything to me and kept me well informed.

In two days I was taken to the Ward on the 5th floor South. I immediately noticed that the workload of the nurses on the ED was immense, in comparison to the nursing staff in the ward. I would like to mention Nurses: Niamh, Edel, Doris, from the health care assistant, Megan.

The cleaner, Molly is a gem of a lady and she is an excellent worker, while being very human.

All of the above ladies are extremely intelligent, professional and kind. I would like to thank them and hope they are appreciated as much  by their supervisors as they are by me.

On the other hand some doctors I saw, in the ED department, were downright ignorant. My vivid recollection is, when lying in the Amber ED, after I have said what had happened to me and why I am in the ED, the staff member looked at me saying, And?

I felt that I was bothering them. As if me collapsing and hitting my head wasn’t good enough reason for me being in the hospital.

The last day of my stay in the hospital was late June 2025. A staff member from endocrinology, came to announce to me that they don’t want to do anymore scans and tests on me because they had no reason to. I was accused of an eating disorder and an psychiatric evaluation was recommended. I categorically denied any recent or history of any eating disorder and my family and friends can vouch for that. The same goes for the use of diuretic and laxatives. I have never used any!

Consultant Ahmed was caring. He wanted to test me for the Addison’s Disease, before I was released from the hospital, but because endocrinology already made their mind, this never happened. I felt like a fool. Especially, when I had another collapse episode during my stay in the hospital.

I felt that all my concerns about my physical health were dismissed by endocrinology. Their delivery of the ‘diagnosis’ was arrogant and rude. I feel retraining in patients’ care is much needed in this case.

Dr. Ahmed was a gentleman and I am grateful that he did perform several blood tests and ultrasound of my kidneys and bladder.

However, retrospectively I wish he would insist on performing the test for the Addison’s Disease.

The Daisy Hill Hospital has a true potential to be the pride of the NHS in Northern Ireland. There are some outstanding individuals from Doctors to Cleaners. I recognise people, who make a real difference and go the extra mile no matter what.
