"Macular injection clinic"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I am so appreciative of the service I have received over many years...the staff I have seen are always kind, courteous, respectful and try to relax you for what can be a very uncomfortable, but rarely painful procedure.

Most staff have got their art off to perfection and I'm often left wondering why others can be so different.

Yes, you should expect some discomfort, after all you're literally being stabbed in the eye, and yes everyone has a day off when they're not so good, however there is one member of staff who seems to continually get it wrong. And going by a chat in the waiting room, I'm not on my own in my experience....I even reported to my specialist last year that if I continued to have that person I'd be refusing to have anymore injections...yes, it was that painful! I don't know how I managed to stay flat on the couch!

Luckily for me my Ophthalmic Specialist wrote that I find the injections uncomfortable on my notes, so I should  always ask for extra numbing drops...which I do. But when I had that one person again, a few months back, that made no difference  at all. I did try and laugh it off, but I shouldn't need to and my eye hurt for nearly a week after! Luckily I haven't had that member of staff either recently, but another patient I spoke to  said it's going to put them off coming...so as much as I'm writing this story for myself I'm also doing it for them.

I also emphasise that there is an abundance of not just good but brilliant members of staff on the Macular Injection Team.

Dear grandpa f,

Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding the discomfort you have experienced with macular injections on certain occasions. I am sorry to hear that the procedure has been uncomfortable for you. Our goal is always to ensure your comfort and safety throughout your treatment.

We strive to minimise any pain with the numbing drops and careful administration, however it sounds like you have experienced this discomfort when seeing a certain member of the team. Your feedback is important to us and I'd like to review your experience to see how we can improve this for you in future.

Please can you I ask you to contact me on rduh.opaeyeunitteam@nhs.net, so that we can arrange a time to discuss your experience and support you going forward.

Kind regards,

Lauren Tyrer
