"Negative maternity experience"

About: Maternity care / Maternity care (Ward 48)

(as the patient),

I am writing regarding the negative experience I faced on ward 48. This does not reflect the staff on the ward who are providing excellent care.

After an appointment with the community midwife at 40+2 I was advised to go to maternity assessment due to high blood pressure. I attended maternity assessment that afternoon for BP monitoring which concluded with my BP had not decreased. I spoke with a consultant and was strongly advised that I should undergo and induction effectively leaving me no other option. Something that I did not want to do however felt that I should not go against the medical advice I was being presented with. I opted to have a sweep done while in maternity assessment and was booked into the induction ward the next day in the evening. I was also advised that I would not be able to have the balloon induction as an outpatient which would have been my preference.

I received the balloon induction at around 11pm on a Wednesday night. This was then removed the next day after around 22 hours. I was examined, advised that I was 2cm dilated, given a sweep and told that the next step would be to break my waters on the labour ward. I was placed on a list and was 3rd. The next morning (Friday) the midwife advised that I was 2nd on the list.

It is extremely difficult to get sleep on ward 48, the heat alone makes it very uncomfortable. It is very noisy and isn't helped with patients not being mindful of others. Engaging in phonecall etc during the night. New rules have come into play with visiting concluded at 10pm however one night during my stay a birthing partner was allowed to stay which resulted in increased noise throughout the night. I understand that there will be exceptions in place however this should be so in a private room.

I have struggled with sleep getting around 3/4 max per day which has deeply effected me and does not put me in good stead for labour. Something that I voiced my concern about on day 1 in the ward.

At this point I was 40+6 and was advised that I should not go over 41 weeks, despite this I have not seen a consultant the whole time I have been on ward 48 (despite being on a red pathway). I am struggling to understand how I will be admitted to the labour to have my water broken if I keep being moved further down the list due labour admissions.

This experience so has had a negative impact on my wellbeing. Which I believe also impacted my ability to go into labour naturally and ultimately impact my performance in labour.

Dear Patientx789,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Ward 48. I want to begin by sincerely acknowledging the challenges you’ve described and the impact this has had on your wellbeing. Your feedback is incredibly important, and I’m truly sorry that your experience did not reflect the standard of care and support we aim to provide.

I appreciate your recognition of the staff’s dedication and professionalism, even amidst the difficulties you faced. It’s clear that your concerns stem not from the individuals providing care, but from the circumstances surrounding your stay—particularly the induction process, the shared ward environment, and the communication around your care plan.

We understand how distressing it can be to feel that choices around your birth plan are limited, especially when decisions are made under pressure. Your concerns about the lack of sleep, the discomfort of the ward environment, and the inconsistent application of visiting policies are valid and deeply concerning. We also acknowledge the emotional toll of waiting for labour ward transfer without clear updates, especially when you were advised not to go beyond 41 weeks and were on a red pathway.

We are reviewing your feedback carefully, particularly in relation to:

The communication and clarity around induction and consultant reviews.
The impact of shared ward environments on rest and recovery.
The consistency of visiting policy enforcement, especially overnight as we implement a revised Visiting pathway within Maternity.
The need for timely updates and reassurance during the induction process.
Your experience highlights areas where we must do better, and your voice will help us to do so.

Thank you again for sharing your story. We are committed to learning from your experience and ensuring that others receive the compassionate, respectful, and supportive care they deserve.

Best wishes

Gaynor
