"I can't thank all the staff enough"

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care Borders General Hospital / Theatres

(as the patient),

I was told at my 12 week scan I had a high chance that I had a missed miscarriage, it was a very emotional and confusing experience but Ailsa the Midwife Sonographer at Borders General Hospital on the Maternity Ward was absolutely amazing(!), she spoke in detail and explained every possibility and outcome of my circumstances and expressed her condolences to me and my partner while telling us the news.

Later that evening I started my miscarriage, it then went on to develop into heavy bleeding and concerning pain, we rang the emergency number that Ailsa provided us and were asked to come to the Maternity Ward for a review, I was seen to immediately by two midwives Nicole and Brooke who were also amazing. Their care and consideration for me and my partner was so appreciated, especially since we arrived in the middle of the night about 1am.

We had multiple visits into our room close together so I could be monitored carefully and it wasn’t long before the doctor Sabrina came and started looking at me and doing what she could to help stop the bleeding, she explained she will attempt anything possible to help me before I was taken into theatre, and described in detail the stages that will be taken in order to help me. After a few hours of procedures and monitoring me it was time for a second opinion from another doctor who wasn’t present on the ward at the time so I didn’t get a name, he advised to go ahead with the procedure in theatre. I’d never been under general aesthetic before so I was a little scared but my worries were quickly put to rest as the compassion and support from all the women on the team was unmatched and they made me feel so safe and comfortable throughout. Unfortunately I didn’t get the name for the anaesthesiologist but I believe she had blonde hair and glasses, she also deserves a special mention for being amazing with me. The procedure only took 10 minutes and I was greeted back with a warm welcome and an ice lolly in the recover room.

It wasn’t long before I was wheeled back into my gorgeous room where my partnered had been staying and waiting for me. The procedure went smoothly and doctor Sabrina believed she was happy with the results, however we were still monitored closely and taken care of with plenty of tea and toast. The bleeding had nearly stopped all together as soon as I returned from theatre and I was told I lost of whopping 1.5 litres of blood! I was tested to check if I needed a blood transfusion but as everything was done in a meticulous manner, fortunately, I didn't need any further medial treatment.

I can’t thank all the staff in the Maternity departments at Borders General Hospital enough, my heart goes out to each and every one of them for the constant support, compassion and reassurance. A very special mention to Ailsa for making a return to see us while we were under care as soon as she arrived to work that day. Her dedication to helping people and making them feel safe and not alone is admirable. I will look forward to coming back to that ward in the future when its time to have my baby.

All the love and gratitude,
