"Having recent surgery for DCIS"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Breast Care

(as the patient),

I had surgery for DCIS. I just want to say that the treatment I received, from the staff in the pre-op section to the surgical team (my surgeon Mr Simpson, the anaesthetist Eimear) and all of the other members in After Care, was exemplary. Everyone explained my surgery to me in clear terms and were very respectful and extremely kind.

My only negative comment would be, that when I arrived at the hospital at the requested appointment time of 07.30 there was absolutely no-one at reception to tell me where to go and it was only when a member of the medical staff appeared that he could direct me. Also, (2 negative comments), is it really necessary to have to answer the same (lengthy) questions five times? Such a waste of time. Surely these questions and answers are logged into the patient’s medical record and can therefore be accessed quite clearly, either by your name or H&C number?

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. My name is Maggie Bamford, Lead Nurse for General Surgery and Breast Surgery. I will pass on your comments to all the staff you have mentioned. I'm pleased to hear that your experience was mostly positive. Pre Admission is something which we are currently working on to smooth out the pathway for our patients, as we recognise that this can be at times somewhat repetitive. Although some questions must be asked again on day of admission, our staff do have access to previous questions asked and should use this as a reference point as much as possible to prevent repetition. We will work on signage for the area and ensure staff are available when patients arrive.

Thank you again for your feedback, and I hope you are recovering well
