My mum had a fall at home early June, we called the paramedics who came and checked my mum. My mum has dementia, so isn't really able to communicate very well, there was no visible broken bones so my mum remained at home after they had completed all their checks.
The next morning my mums chest was covered in bruises, so we took her to A&E, after about 13 hours in hospital ( which took us to about 3am), they said my mum had a fracture in her sternum and 2 vertibrates in her back and she would be admitted.
Fast forward to 3 days later, a doctor came to see my sister and dad and said they had re-looked at the scan and my mum also had fractures in her pelvis at both sides, they also seen a mass in her stomach which they said they thought was 99.9% cancer and that they did not think my mum was fit enough then for further tests, but it would be discussed with GI team and they would let us know the outcome.
Everyday, we asked if there was anymore news on this, nothing we were told. A week later, 2 doctors came to see me, my dad and my daughter, they had a laptop with them, they looked at it and advised that my mum had been discussed during a meeting 2 days before, but the report had not been typed up yet and we should hear early the following week. Again, from then, we asked everyday for update on that meeting, two weeks later, we were then informed by a nurses and community management that my mum wasn't discussed in the meeting but would be discussed that day at their other meeting. So again we waiting, then after me asking again, 2 nurses come to see me and my dad to ask us where we got that there was a meeting on a Friday, as there was never a meeting on a Friday, it was a Monday and that my mum was only going to be discussed over 2 weeks since she had been admitted!! so now it was the day of the meeting and we had been told my mum was meant to be getting discharged that day and that one the meeting had taken place, we would either get a letter, phone call or doctor would come to see us.
After my mum waiting hours for her medication to be discharged, a doctor then told my sister that my mum would need to come back as an out patient so she could get a endoscopy and that we should not think it's anything sinister until the tests had been done, yet 2 weeks before we were told they were 99.9% sure it was cancer!! so for 2 weeks, we thought my mum had cancer and may still have and now we are back to waiting for a date for her endoscopy to be done.
To say, we are very disappointed in how we have been treated, would be an understatement. Ah and i will also add that on the day before the actual meeting, the nurses asked if we had been told that my mums liver function was high, this we also did not know, so we are also now waiting for a MRCP which they have said could be up to 2 years! My mum is coming up to her 78th birthday, had dementia, type 1 diabetic, so waiting 2 years seams crazy to me.
We also had other issues while my mum was in hospital, having dementia, she is not able to ask for pain killers, when we asked on a few occasion if my mum had been given pain killers, we were told no, because she didn't ask! My mum is also incontinent and on more than one occasion, it was hours between her getting taken to the toilet, one of these times, when my sister asked if they could take her to toilet, she was informed they had taken my mum to toilet just before my dad and sister arrived, which was nearly 3 hours ago, when my sister said this, she was accused of being rude to the nurse.
