I suffered with a severe issue with my gallbladder and was having quite a serious attack which within 2 days I had to end up having emergency surgery because I was in so much pain, so weak, hadn’t eaten or slept for over 48 hours and just generally really unwell, I had to call 111 as I felt I couldn’t cope at home anymore with the pain, upon arriving to the hospital (A&E) as 111 suggested ( in so much pain I could hardly breathe or talk) I was made to stand to fill out a online form and was requested to wait in the waiting area, upon that day I was seen quite quickly and was tried to be helped as much as possible and as soon as possible, I was admitted to a ward where I was just continually pumped with medication as I was in so much pain and then shortly after it weared of a tiny bit. I was discharged and sent home at the time I was hoping and praying that the pain would stay subsided.
An hour after I was home with all this medication, no sleep for days, no food for days and in so much discomfort I couldn’t stay in the same position, couldn’t carry out even the simplest tasks, I remained in this pain for hours before I couldn’t take it again and had to call 111 which took me back to the exact same place ( A&e) again, upon arriving again in the most severe pain the waiting room was so full and the wait time was 6 hours, they suggested I took a seat on the floor outside to wait whilst not even being able to breathe properly? I was expressing my concerns to the reception and that I felt I was going to die but no one would take the matter serious.
I was left in the waiting room for hours at a time almost begging and waiting for some medication just to help ease the pain and make sitting there the tiniest bit easier but none of the staff I saw seemed to have any urgency or any compassion whatsoever, I felt at the worst and the most scared point of my life and I didn’t seem listened to at all. It all seemed crazy to me considering I was just admitted hours before on a ward.
After finally being readmitted (and hours of begging for help in unexplainable pain) they decided that emergency surgery would have to be carried out and within the day and from then on being on the ward I couldn’t of asked for much more, I was looked after amazingly and I really felt they saw and recognised my pain with compassion and I felt a lot more safe.
Accident and emergency needs a lot of work but I couldn’t thank the ward enough and for practically making me feel like they saved my life.
"Awful care"
