Soon after I had a heart valve replacement, I was invited to Cardiac Rehabilitation at Stobhill. I didn’t feel very keen on exercise at the time - I just wanted to do whatever was recommended to improve my recovery. I have never enjoyed exercise beyond walking or cycling, and going to a gym was inconceivable to me.
I was warmly welcomed by the staff and carefully assessed before my first session. The exercises were not too challenging and I learned how to reach a moderate intensity of effort - the point is not to push your limits. Along with a good amount of walking and the rehab sessions I reached my original fitness level from before surgery. I appreciated the sensitive but encouraging way the staff focus on your recovery and monitor your health throughout.
The facilities are modern, spotlessly clean and well designed. With the support of staff I even began to enjoy the activities, which is no small achievement. I have now moved on to solo gym sessions - again, something I could never have imagined.
I am very grateful to all the staff and students who supported me through my recovery - I think this vital service may be under appreciated, but it has been absolutely critical in bringing me back to good health after surgery.
