"They really opened my eyes"

About: Addiction services / The Asha Centre

(as a service user),

I've struggled with addiction for about 16 to 17 years. I decided myself I needed help. I came in to Asha anxious and scared, nervous and not knowing what to expect. After the first few days I started coming round. I've had a couple really rough days, ups and downs but I stuck it out with the help of the staff and nurses. I was never judged or looked down on and always treated equal and fairly.

I learnt a lot about myself and the true me while I was at ASHA. Also I learnt a lot about drugs and the effects it has on you, which will help me cope when I leave.  I didn't realise the effect my drug use had on my family, group sessions were lethal in they really opened my eyes to what I doing to the people I loved the most. I now enjoy getting stuck into the group sessions. Never thought I would be in an AA meeting and sharing every time I get an opportunity to talk. I could relate to every story in the room, it was mad. I realised that it's not only me who has these problems, it's a lot of people from different backgrounds.

Thinking if there could be any improvements, I can honestly say no, the staff were unreal and stuck it out with me over the 4 week program.

I can't emphasise enough the group work we covered in the 2 daily sessions, they really opened my eyes and helped me deal with my addiction and what was holding me back.

My care was brilliant, everyone very understanding. Even with the ups and downs, you could talk to staff for support. I could take a wee breather and then be back to my normal self. I took it a day at a time and loved the experience of getting proper help for my past tr*uma's. Working with Dr Kinch has been a life changer and helped me cope with my demons. My negativity has gone, feeling more positive and I will continue my EMDR therapy sessions when I leave.

I will continue to link in with the ex-service user meetings at ASHA on a Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings.

I am so grateful for the opportunity. I got my life back on track with my family and kids and a clear head. Just looking forward to the future.
