I was on holiday in Scotland and injured my finger just badly enough that a sticking plaster wasn't going to be enough. Not knowing the health system, I enquired at a small local NHS clinic who suggested I go to a Minor Injuries Unit. They provided a number of treatments but had to refer me further for surgery. I couldn't help but notice from my first contact with the small clinic to the last contact for surgery, staff were so approachable and pleasant. Even if things took a while, checks, explanations, updates, first from the reception then nurse practitioner, Linsey, later from student nurse, Becky, assigned nurse, Jenny, and nurse practitioner, Jemma and assistant, Shona, were consistently warm and down to earth throughout their shifts.
My impression was staff - including the surgery team, cleaning and kitchen staff - worked together. I sincerely appreciate the care but perhaps even more, the atmosphere created by staff not just doing their job, but being there for patients. One other thing, they say it's the little things that matter but what sticks with me now is a wink from one nurse, friendly distraction during treatment, being asked about pain, and being given great follow up information. It's the kind of thing you can't pay for and you don't get everywhere. I believe in public services and I commend those who provide it. So to NHS - Fife Queen Margaret and Victoria Hospitals, I say may you keep the standard of care you have achieved!
