"Wisdom Tooth Extraction"

About: Edinburgh Dental Institute / Oral Surgery & Medicine

(as a relative),

My partner has to get 2 wisdom teeth removed. His first extraction took place fairly recently and the team that cared for him were outstanding. From the moment they collected him from the waiting room they were empathetic to his nerves and put him right at ease, cracking jokes and explaining exactly what was about to happen.

By the time the whole process was done, they came to let me sit with him in the recovery room while they made sure he was okay coming down off the drugs he'd been given and would be fit to go home. Again, the care was phenomenal. They spoke to both of us and made us feel so welcome, kept him calm. The lady who was with us, Shaughna, was coming up to either end of shift or lunch break (I forget which sorry) but opted to stay with my partner till the end of his visit to ensure he had a familiar friendly face with him. That put her almost 20-30 minutes late for her to get some well deserved rest, purely because she wanted to ensure my partner and I got away safely.

As his escort, I left feeling confident I knew exactly how to care for him, and my partner left feeling much less nervous about his next appointment for the second extraction. So far his healing journey has given him minimal pain and swelling. The whole thing has, touch wood, gone really well.

I really cannot rate the care the team gave him highly enough and am so grateful for the way they treated him. I can't say he's excited to get another tooth removed - nobody would be! - but it certainly is far less daunting knowing he'll be so well looked after when we go back for round 2. Thank you all so much!

Dear Bubble98,

Thank you so much for your incredibly thoughtful message. It truly means a great deal to our entire team to hear how positive your partner’s experience was during his recent visit.

We understand how worrying dental procedures can be, and we’re so pleased to know that our efforts to create a calm, welcoming environment helped put both of you at ease. Your kind words about the care, communication, and support you received—especially your mention of Shaunagh's dedication—have been shared with the team and were deeply appreciated.

Shaunagh, in particular, was touched by your recognition of her decision to stay and ensure continuity of care. It’s gestures like hers that reflect the heart of what we strive for every day: compassionate, patient-centred care that makes a real difference.

We’re also glad to hear that your partner is healing well and feeling more confident about his next appointment. We’ll be here to support him every step of the way.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience. It truly lifts our spirits and reminds us why we do what we do.

Warmest regards,
Alexander D. Keir
