"A working audiology system"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Audiology

(as a service user),

There was a working efficient audiology system, with repairs backup, and in April it was changed, l was concerned and emailed into the referral route asking what the route through was going to be, as I am still working and because the new hearing aids don’t have a moisture trap, they regularly give up the ghost. I had a blasé reply back to my email, which I felt dealt only with the points they wanted to reply to, and a call back in late May from the appointment team offering me an appointment in mid July, in an opticians in Okehampton. I asked what would happen if the aids broke down before then and was told just to go in and explain, say I had an appointment booked and see if they could help.

I really wasn’t happy with that, but like everyone else l had no choice.

On day two of my recent holiday one of my hearing aids packed up and l was left half deaf and had trouble entering into conversations, ending up very frustrated.

On my return, l went to the opticians in Okehampton as advised, and found, no patient notes, no spares, they confirmed it was dead, but could do nothing, as after three months they could still do nothing, and advised as well, that even after my proper (booked) appointment it would take a further appointment before I would have a set of aids issued.

You try and get help now, and there is out dated information on the internet, old numbers support lines that don’t support.

I know of others who have had this experience as well, this is a shocking situation which needs to be resolved, and it appears the people that should be fixing it aren’t, this is really affecting people’s lives, and the team responsible should be taken to task over it. We are 3 months past the swap over and it’s still not working !

I am very frustrated and disappointed about what has been done to a system that worked, can you please sort this out.

Dear hearing aid sufferer,

My name is Anna Trotter and I am the associate head of audiology in the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital looking after specialist audiology services.

Many thanks for posting the feedback as it is really helpful to hear exactly how the change has affected service users and when things haven't gone quite as smoothly as we would like. I'm so sorry that you have been left without a working hearing aid and I wonder if we might be able to help with this in the meantime as you await your appointment with the other provider.

If you would like me to look into this for you, please do feel free to contact me directly by email: a.trotter1@nhs.net or by phoning 01392 402223 and asking for me by name.

I sincerely hope that we will be able to help and look forward to hearing from you.

With best wishes,

Anna
