"Septic kidney stones and lack of hygiene"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / ENT and Urology inpatient West 1 Craigavon Area Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

Admitted on a Friday in June with septic kidney stones. Rushed into surgery had 2 stints in left side kidneys. Come out of recovery with septic shock so spent 2 days in recovery with amazing nurses and brilliant treatment until I was moved on the Sunday to 1 west.

Most of the staff were nice. The second night on ward night nurse never used gloves to change my iv drips or canula. I found this shocking and scary as I was recovering from sepsis and am also high risk as I am auto immune. I did let the ward nurse know the next day and she apologise but it wasn't her fault for other nurses poor hygiene.

Also 1 day my food menus were never took after me telling the ward helpers. So 1 day I never received any lunch or dinner. They gave me tea and toast instead. Which for me I fear for people who can't talk or with dementia. This is shocking. But the worst was the ward hygiene.

The place was disgusting. 8 days in and the bathroom has been cleaned 3 times. Once I had to ask as their was poo all over the toilet seat and sink. Then the next day the same thing only this time the toilet is blocked. It was absolutely disgusting. Even at home I wipe round my toilet and sink daily. I am completely shocked by this. And think more needs to be done.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of Ward 1 West with us.

I am disappointed that a nurse was observed not to be wearing gloves when attending to your IV line. I sincerely apologise for this, this is not the standard expected from our nursing team. This was immediately addressed with the staff on the ward.

I apologise that your menus were not collected, resulting in a meal not being provided for you. This is not acceptable and we expect our patients to be provided with a proper meal of their choice. If there is no meal provided for any patient, the ward can request an additional meal from the hospital kitchen. I am sorry this was not offered to you. The ward sister and deputy sisters have discussed this with the entire team and highlighted the importance of ensuring this happens.

You can contact me directly if you wish to discuss your care experience further or provide any more information.

Kindest regards

Sarah Ward

Hello magpie86

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with us.

I apologise that you found the cleanliness of the bathroom on the ward unsatisfactory and I appreciate this is not acceptable.

The toilets are cleaned 3 times per day by Domestic Services staff, and if additional cleaning is required throughout the day or night this can be requested by nursing staff.

I appreciate that you may not have seen anyone cleaning the toilets, however the Domestic staff have given assurance that the bathrooms were cleaned and the Domestic Supervisors have confirmed that cleaning was completed as per the work schedules.

Unfortunately there was an issue with the toilet blocked. I'm pleased to report that this was fixed by the Estates Dept on 28/06/25.

If you find the bathroom unclean at any point, please advise nursing staff, and domestic staff will ensure it is cleaned immediately.

I hope you are recovering well after your recent admission.

Jill Robinson
