"Fast response for chest pain"

About: Grangewood / Carrick Waterside Hospital

(as the patient),

To the incredible staff at Gransha Park –

On Monday I became very unwell, very suddenly, while driving into the Gransha grounds. I experienced severe chest pain, a locked jaw, and pain radiating from my back down my left arm. I knew immediately it was my heart.

My husband and my sister-in-law could see the distress I was in. She stayed by my side to reassure and calm me, while my husband ran into Lilac Villa to get help. Two nurses – Rachael and John from the Learning Disability team – quickly came out with oxygen and began helping me.

At the same time, Stephen, Mairead, and Gerard – all supervisors in Support Services – happened to be passing by and immediately came to assist. They rushed to get a defibrillator and alerted more medical staff.

From Carrick Ward, staff called Dr. Kirsty, another doctor, and nurses Lauren and Chloe, who also brought oxygen and provided incredible assistance.

Further support came from the Clinical Intervention Centre – Patricia , Michelle, and a young woman possibly named Denise – who all worked to keep me calm, helped me take my medication, performed an ECG, administered oxygen, and most importantly, made me feel safe.

At one of the most terrifying moments of my life – when I truly believed I might die from the pain and fear – these staff members were my lifeline. The two nurses who stayed in the car with me were phenomenal. They reassured me, helped me breathe, and encouraged me to take my medication, inserted lines, and took bloods – all while we waited for the ambulance. Their calmness, compassion, and speed were nothing short of heroic.

Your swift action, professionalism, and incredible teamwork made such a massive difference in what could have been a tragic outcome. I have no doubt that your care helped save my life.

Words feel inadequate, but I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who came to my aid. In the middle of chaos and fear, you not only provided expert medical care, but also emotional comfort. You made me feel seen, heard, and safe — and for that, I am eternally grateful.

On behalf of myself, my husband, and our children — thank you. If I have missed anyone’s name, I sincerely apologise. So many people came to help that it has been hard to trace you all, but please know that each and every one of you is appreciated beyond words.

You are all true heroes.

With heartfelt thanks and warmest wishes.
