"The best ward in the hospital"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Gynaecology (Ward 49)

(as the patient),

I was recently rushed into A&E for a suspected ectopic pregnancy on my right side. From the moment I was in A&E, the care given was nothing short of phenomenal.

My BP was 250/198 which was double checked straight away and I was given meds to lower my BP down straight away before being taken to the gyn side room in A&E to be scanned for internal bleeding. This all happened within one hour of arriving at the hospital.

Once I was transferred up to ward 49, the care and attention shown was out of this world. Everything was explained so well in so many details so I knew my options. I had an emergency scan in the morning which confirmed an ectopic pregnancy on my right tube. Within 2 hours of this I was in surgery.

Student Nurse Nicole was fantastic. She saw that I wasn’t coping and took time out to sit with me whilst i cried and mourned the loss of the baby still in my stomach, when it was all becoming too much Nicole and Nurse KerryAnn both gave me time to process everything before being rushed to surgery.

Once I was back from surgery, the care which I thought was already at its best, was even better. When they say buzz when you need someone- they really mean it. You are never made to feel like a pest, they truly go above and beyond to help you out in every way possible.

I had to tell my young children what had happened to our baby whilst in hospital and I broke down and Nurse Nicole was there to help and distract my children with biscuits until I was ready. A small act of kindness which truly helped more than you could know.

When they brought the baby loss memory box from Simba, Nicole and Karen took the time to really explain everything in detail and held me whilst I cried throughout.

There is so much more I could go on to say, but honestly Ward 49 you really are spectacular and the care and love you show is amazing. The best team and the best ward.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being there for me and my family during the worst week of our lives.

Dear AP6,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience following what must have been an incredibly distressing time for you and your family.

Your kind words about the care you received in both A&E and Ward 49 mean a great deal to our entire team. I am so sorry for your loss, and I want you to know how much we appreciate you recognising the dedication and compassion of our staff during such a deeply emotional and personal experience.

I’m especially pleased to hear that Nicole, Kerry-Ann and Karen were able to provide not only clinical care, but emotional support when you needed it most. We are very proud of the team on Ward 49 and it is truly heartening to know their commitment to kindness, attentiveness and empathy made such a difference to you. I am delighted to hear the Simba box was something that you appreciated.

Please be assured that your feedback will be shared with all the staff involved in your care, as it will mean so much to them to know they made a positive impact during such a difficult time.

Thank you once again for your thoughtful words. On behalf of the entire Gynaecology team, I send you our warmest wishes and a gentle recovery.

With heartfelt thanks,
Nikki

Dear AP6,

I'm so sorry to hear of your pregnancy loss and the sad time you and your family have been through.

What a frightening experience to be rushed into hospital and on top of that having to deal with such a sad situation is really tough, I'm sorry you had to go through that.

It's good you were dealt with quickly and efficiently in A&E and that you were treated in the private gynaecology side room.

It's wonderful to hear that the care you received on ward 49 was 'out of this world' what a really lovely compliment - thank you.

Also it sounds like the ward 49 staff were able to take time to sit with you and to console you when you needed us the most whilst organising your operation quickly too. Kerri Anne, Karen and the team of staff on the ward will be really appreciative of the recognition of their care and compassion.

Distraction is one of the skills we often use, I'm glad this helped while you had to tell your children, I hope they are ok and coming to terms with the news. Nicole will be truly touched that she helped you at this difficult time.

I wish you a gentle recovery from your loss and your surgery. I hope you are able to take the time to process everything,

Best Wishes

Fiona Proctor
