I moved house almost four years ago. Before registering with a new GP, I told them I was autistic and needed to communicate via email instead of phoning, etc. I asked if I was going to have issues like I did at my previous surgery (not just communication issues, but also with face masks when I was exempt during coronavirus). They said they treated everyone equally etc (well they could hardly say otherwise! But I was trying to pre-empt any problems).
But almost every time I contact them, I have issues. They don't like giving out their email address in the first place. When you use it, they often don't respond promptly. They don't have the online booking system turned on, even though that is an option in their software. It's inaccessible to me.
I asked for an appointment over a month ago, and they haven't responded. They probably only will now because I pointed that out, in a response to an email they sent me re smear tests (which I have opted out of already, and told them not to ask me about them!)
What I want is all GPs to actually care about autistic service users. They should have at least one on staff who is well-trained and the reception staff should be too. But actually, since that's not going to happen (partly, I believe, because of the independent model used for GPs, rather than them being directly run by the trust), what I want is an autistic specialist GP service in Manchester. It might take longer to get there as it won't be as local, but they would understand my needs and meet them, without me having to keep asking. You could work with the SCAIT team to design the service (which is the only NHS service which has ever treated me appropriately).
Also, the surgery has been a building site the whole time I've been registered there. Walls ripped open; cables and pipework hanging out, etc. In my view, it looks more like a squat than a place of healthcare. There seemed to be more progress last time I went there, but they couldn't tell me when it was actually going to be finished.
