"Should have been discussed with parent/guardian"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Radiology

(as a parent/guardian),

My 15 year old daughter attended the X Ray Dept recently at the request of her GP for a shoulder X ray. She was comfortable going in for the X ray herself. The person dealing with her initially made her feel comfortable, took a history, and advised her to put a gown on while she checked with another colleague if an X ray was required.

Another member of staff then came through and was very dismissive of her and made her feel like an inconvenience to their day. They did a brief exam then told her an X Ray would not be required but would double check with a doctor. They left the room for approx. 1 min before returning and abruptly told her the X Ray was not required due to the risk of radiation. They then passively aggressively apologised for the wait but then complained they would have to write up the clinical notes. My daughter was told to get dressed and leave.

At no point in this process did anyone ask to speak to myself regarding my daughter's care. I fully appreciate wanting to avoid unnecessary radiation however we were there at the request of the GP due to a longstanding shoulder issue which we are trying to resolve and there is no need to belittle a 15 year old who was following instructions from her GP. If there was an issue this should have been discussed with a parent/guardian. I was in the waiting area the entire time but by the time my daughter had informed me of the events we were unable to speak to any staff members as the following patient was promptly called through.
