"A mixed experience with some excellent patient care"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Acute Medical Unit (AMU) 1 & 2 Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Emergency Department Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Wheal Prosper Ward

(as a relative),

My father was admitted via ED in June  and then moved to AMU2. His clinical condition was assessed and treated quickly. Unfortunately some of the care received on ED and AMU was poor. Lack of cleanliness - moved into a side room that hadn’t been cleaned. Failure to meet his personal care needs - left in visibly soiled clothes. Myself and my husband had to carry out much of the personal care for him. Thankfully he was the moved to Wheal Prosper.

Where the care my father received enabled a rapid turnaround in his condition.

On arrival we entered a spotless room and were greeted by friendly staff.

My Dad was asked what he would like to be called ( the first time in his admission)

Observations, medications were all completed on time. Every member of staff followed PPE protocols.

Care rounds were meaningful, time taken to check for soiled pads and comfort not just ticking a box.

Excellent nutrition and encouragement to enjoy meals.

All staff were kind and caring enjoying a joke with my Dad.

Today I collected him, everything was organised. Superb discharge planning and offers of support.

Wheal prosper is an example of the best standard of care. Clearly without the transfer to Wheal Prosper my Dad would have struggled to recover so quickly.

,

I was deeply saddened to learn that, at a time that was already very stressful for you and your father, we failed to provide the safe, clean environment and standard of care you rightly expected when he arrived in AMU. Please accept my sincere apologies.

I am especially concerned about the state of the side-room you describe. Cleanliness is a fundamental part of dignified care, and we clearly fell short. I will feed this back to the ward team immediately, and I will share your father’s experience in our next staff newsletter so that every member of the unit understands the impact lapses like this can have.

While I am relieved to hear that your father’s stay ultimately improved, the beginning of his journey with us should never have added to your worry.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. If you would like to discuss anything further, or if there is more we can do to support you and your father, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

With sincere apologies,

Natalie Keogh, Clinical Matron of Acute Medicine
