"I really appreciate being able to access this clinic"

About: Heavitree Hospital / Lymphoedema Service

(as the patient),

I recently attended the lymphoedema clinic for a review after a referral from my GP. The lymphoedema nurse instantly put me at ease in the way she welcomed me. Her approach was completely person centred so I didn't just feel like a list of symptoms. Her conversation showed she had prepared for the review and she really listened to my history and my present concerns. I knew she was listening because she checked back with me and looked engaged. Her approach was professional and friendly. She understood why my condition has got me down over the years. She was able to reassure me by using equipment and measurements to answer my concerns, and provided some enlightenment about the source of my condition, which was positive.

We talked through the different garments that were available and how they could be used to alleviate some of my symptoms. They were sent as promised for me to trial and I have really benefited from a new approach in managing my lymphoedema.

My only concern is the staffing levels for the clinic as there don't seem to be enough staff to cover the range of demands placed on them. This is shown by the waiting lists for appointments. I ended up paying privately for treatment because of the wait where I found I had been given incorrect advice. If it hadn't been for the time and the advice of the lymphoedema nurse, I would have wasted more money on inappropriate treatment, which I can't afford.

I also want to thank the administration staff at the lymphoedema clinic who have been very helpful when I have phoned up with queries. Again they are friendly, helpful and put me at ease.

I really appreciate being able to access this clinic and want to thank the staff who work within it.

Thank you very much for posting your story on Care Opinion, I apologise for the delay in responding to your comments, as you mentioned we are short of staff at present.

We are delighted that you felt listened to and supported during your appointment. We all work hard to try and ensure every person coming through the clinic is treated in a holistic, professional and friendly manner.

The clinic is currently going through some changes with staff at present, there is a vacant post which has been advertised, so hopefully this will go someway to improving staffing levels.

Once again thank you for your kind words, they mean a great deal to the whole team.

Debbie, Clinical Nurse Specialist (Lymphoedema)

I am delighted to update that we have a new band 7 in post who is Lead Lymphoedema nurse, covering both East and North Devon. This is helping to resolve the staffing issues, making appointments easier.
