"Medically Retired due to ill health"

About: Mental Health Community Services / Condition Management Programme

(as a service user),

I have suffered from psoriatic arthritis for 30 years-over the last few years I also developed osteoarthritis in my hands and feet. Being on my feet and using my hands on a daily basis meant that I was unable to carry out my work without being in constant pain. I was medically retired in December 2024. This through everything into chaos. I suffered from depression and a sense of loss. I now also suffer from chronic pain as my condition has become worse..

Thank you for sharing your story. Retirement can be a difficult process and many people recognise the sense of loss that you describe. I am unsure from your response if you have been involved with NHSCT's Condition Management Programme. One of the reasons why a person may decide to engage with CMP would be to access information and support to consider alternative work roles. Balancing health, work roles and wellbeing can be challenging. Living with chronic pain can indeed impact on mood and a person's emotional wellbeing. Versus Arthritis offer community based and online support for people living with persistent pain. This may be something you could consider exploring, their website contains lots of helpful information too.

Sinead, CMP Team Lead.
