"Failure to save my daughter after five years!"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Gynaecology Lincoln County Hospital / Oncology

(as a service user),

My daughter passed away December 2023 aged just forty. She had an ovarian cyst and suffered with endometriosis for many years. She was admitted to have the cyst removed in January 2019. The anaesthetists refused the operation as they found she had a heart problem. She underwent heart surgery at Glenfield Hospital Leicester in August 2019.

After recovery she was told she was fit to have the cyst removed. Still they used every other option to prevent the surgery going ahead. Including Depo-provers for about on year for the constant bleeding. She did have pelvic ultrasound scans every few months. She pleaded for help on many occasions including help from her GP.

Only in the Autumn of 2023 did they start doing MRI and a CT scans. Blood Tests were few and far between. By October 2023 it was found that she had advanced endometrial cancer (Stage 4) not only that but her kidneys were failing. She was told she could not have chemotherapy treatment until her kidneys gave a reading of 40. She underwent many rounds of dialysis to no avail. She had been transferred to Burton Ward renal unit, after which the gynaecology team failed to visit.

I was told by the specialist oncology nurse that they would follow up chemo when her kidneys responded to the dialysis. At no time did any of the team from the gynaecology dept visit her, no doctors, no oncology nurses, no counselling and certainly no palliative care from any of them.

As a mother I had to watch my daughter suffer for the last four weeks of her life! We did complain to the complaints department at the hospital. Their response was not satisfactory on any account. We feel there’s been a complete cover up, protecting the Doctor who was supposed to be overseeing her care.

Not only that the doctor had been practising since 2001 and was supposedly teaching other medical students! Where was the clinical lead for that dept and when were they informed?

Only one meeting with the Oncologist/Gynaecologist at my daughters request. I was with her when my daughter asked are you saying I’ve got cancer?

In utter disbelief my daughter told them that she was told over and over again that her condition was not life threatening!

The doctor who what been overseeing her care for a long period of time never uttered a word! Whilst undergoing dialysis my daughter requested a meeting with the clinical lead from gynaecology. I had to wheel her in a wheelchair from the main hospital to the Maternity Unit/Gynaecology Dept as she was now unable to walk any distance.

A senior staff member informed her the lymph nodes were up in her liver and at that point my daughter knew her chances were very slim. My daughter was fit and active and had been paddle boarding in September2023  despite her condition.

So within three months she had deteriorated so badly and suffered an unimaginable death due to a chain of poor decisions. As a family we feel they failed in their ‘duty of care’ to save my daughters life. We are still considering what action to take to get some accountability from the medical team that were trusted with my care.
