"I feel utterly let down by Gynaecology NHS GGC"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Gynaecology/Colposcopy Outpatients

(as the patient),

I have been attending gynaecology @ RAH for some time now and still I feel I am no further forward and have no true answers to my symptoms or plan of care. I was under a consultant that was due to retire and I feel like I was not fully listened to or fully investigated with regards to my symptoms. It felt like the consultant was not dealing with my situation appropriately. I started on a course of hormone therapy which did help with some of my symptoms but I had also asked many time if I should be scanned to ensure there was nothing else going on and it was definitely umbilical endometriosis that I was dealing with as this was a big concern of mine. I was informed this was not required.  I then received a clinic appointment to see a Doctor in mid Sept 2024 I attended. I finally felt like I was being heard and a plan was in place although I had to stop my treatment with a view to attending for an MRI in February to allow a definitive plan of care to be put in place. I have called a couple of times to chase things up since February to be told I had to wait for my appointment. I then called mid June and spoke to a secretary only to be told that there were no clinic notes on the system for the appointment I attended in September and therefore an MRI would not have been requested. I was distressed when I heard this. I was informed that an appointment would be arranged within a month to see the Doctor. I have received an appointment via post today for an October appointment which has left me totally distraught. I feel so let down and frustrated with the whole situation.  I have been struggling through life as my symptoms have a huge impact on my daily living. This is now impacting on my family life, mental health and I worry as a medical professional working within the NHS it will start impacting my working life as I have done my best to struggle through work and not be off because of this. I would be more than grateful if there is anyone that can help with my care.

Dear Concerned patient#1

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am so sorry to hear about the difficulties you’ve faced in your ongoing care with the Gynaecology service at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Your experience sounds incredibly frustrating and distressing, and I completely understand how the lack of clarity and delays you’ve described would leave you feeling let down — particularly when your symptoms are having such a significant impact on your daily life, mental wellbeing, and work.

It is deeply concerning to hear that there were no clinic notes from your previous appointment and that this may have delayed your MRI and treatment plan. I appreciate how upsetting this must have been, especially after finally feeling that a plan of care was starting to take shape.

Please know that we take your concerns seriously and are keen to help. If you would be willing, I would be grateful if you could contact me directly so I can look into your case in more detail and explore what can be done to support you moving forward. You can reach me at Jennifer.Harvey@nhs.scot — please include your full name, date of birth or CHI number, and a brief mention of your Care Opinion post so I can identify your care pathway.

Thank you again for your honesty — your feedback will be shared with the relevant teams to help us reflect and improve. I hope we can work together to ensure you receive the support and care you need and deserve.

Kind Regards

Jen
