Following a difficult experience at another hospital, my GP referred me to Abbey Ward at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. I had a rapidly worsening, infected cyst which required urgent incision and drainage. Understandably, I arrived with a fair bit of apprehension on a Friday morning — but from the moment I stepped onto the ward, I was met by a team whose compassion and professionalism instantly put me at ease.
The staff carried out all necessary checks promptly, ensured I was seen by the doctor quickly, and clearly explained what the procedure would involve. I was informed there would be a wait due to emergency cases taking precedence, but this was communicated with such empathy and clarity that I felt fully supported throughout.
I was shown to a light and airy waiting area where I spent the day. From that spot, I observed the entire team as they calmly and kindly dealt with everyone who came through the doors. No one was rushed, no one made to feel like an inconvenience — even in the busiest moments, the atmosphere remained one of care, dignity, and genuine attentiveness.
I was particularly moved to see that the same staff who had booked me in that morning were still on duty nearly 12 hours later when I was taken to theatre. They remained just as patient, considerate, and reassuring as they had been at the start of the day — a true testament to their dedication.
I rarely need to call on the NHS, but my previous experience had left me shaken by the lack of care or individuality shown. What I found at Abbey Ward was the complete opposite: a team who treat people as individuals, with kindness, respect, and humanity at the core of everything they do.
I’m truly grateful to everyone I encountered please can you make sure that they know how appreciated they are.
"A team who treat people with kindness, respect, and humanity"
