"My journey so far"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Radiotherapy

(as a service user),

Visited GP with increased frequency in urination.  Had been on prostate meds for a number of years.  PSA was recorded as just above the upper limit for referral.  GO suggested hanging fire and keep an eye on things but not refer at this stage.  Made it very clear I wasn’t happy as upper limit is there for a reason.  GP then decided to refer me.  Another PSA done and level still above upper limit.  Referred for scan.  Something there.  Biopsy and prostate cancer diagnosis Feb 2024.  Saw consultant ant options explained for treatment.  Decided on surgical intervention.  Had robotic assisted radical prostatectomy carried out in June 2024.  Surgeon explained operation had gone really well and tumor was totally removed within the prostate so he was very pleased with the outcome.  Management then PSA every 3 months.  PSA still detectable and at each test for the next couple showed doubling of levels.  Referred for PET Scan.  Nothing detected on scan. Referred by urology consultant to oncologist.  Appointment with her and told would need 33 sessions of radiology to prostate bed and pelvic lymph nodes along with hormone therapy for one month of pills and three monthly injections for 2 years. Radiology was every day Monday to Friday for six and a half weeks.  Finished treatment on Friday 20 June and PSA test in 6 weeks with follow up phone appointment with oncologist.  Back on the waiting game.
