"Receptionist Conduct in Triage Area – Ward 15"

About: University Hospitals Of Leicester NHS Trust

I am writing to raise a concern regarding the experience my father-in-law had during his recent admission to Ward 15. While we understand that he was admitted while awaiting test results—and that there were delays due to system issues—our primary concern relates to the conduct of a receptionist on duty in the triage area at approximately 18:20.

At that time, the triage waiting area was completely empty, with all seats unoccupied. Despite this, the receptionist refused to allow any family members of patients in Ward 15 to sit and wait, including elderly relatives. When asked for an explanation, she simply stated, “I can’t let you sit here,” without offering any rationale, alternatives, or empathy. Her manner was abrupt and dismissive, lacking in both courtesy and professionalism.

While we fully understand that safety and hospital policies must be followed, we believe they can be communicated with basic respect and understanding—particularly when dealing with elderly or anxious family members. Unfortunately, this interaction left us feeling unwelcome and unnecessarily distressed.

We want to acknowledge and commend the nursing and medical staff for their dedication and care. However, we felt it was important to highlight this experience so that it can be addressed appropriately, and similar situations can be handled more considerately in the future.
