Was called to say mum had passed away. Nurse that called was compassionate on the phone and when we arrived on the ward. After spending time with my mum, my sister-in-law said she would take my mum's jewellery off so not to get lost. She couldn’t get her wedding ring off. I said I will go speak to a nurse on ward.
When I arrived at the station, nurses were all sitting getting ready to hand over. I stood for what felt like ages but probably not. This was 6.30 in the morning.
A nurse turned round and said - what is it? To say I was angry is an understatement. Due to circumstances I never said anything. Had this been a normal day, they would have been told please remember who you are speaking to and took it further.
Due to time of morning, the nurse was aware why I was there. If I had been them I would have stood up and approached the desk, offered my condolences, and asked if I was ok and in a compassionate tone ask what they could have done.
I get this might be a job to this nurse, but they need to be reminded about compassion and the feelings of others, especially at this difficult time, and I hope no one treats them or their loved ones like this. I also get death is part of everyday life for nurses, but not for their patients and their families.
