"A very stressful experience"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

After been told by two ophthalmologists and an optician that I had entropion I attended an appointment to have a correction procedure. The staff member I saw told me they could not see the problem and told me I probably had a hair in my eye!!  However they did say there was a consultant present in the hospital and they would see if he was available to have a look. Fortunately the consultant agreed with the other professionals and advised them to continue. During the procedure the staff member told me I was very tense and my whole body taught. I didn’t say anything to them but it was due to me having no faith in them ability as they had admitted they could see nothing wrong.

I had previously had this procedure done to one eye and they told me when I first arrived that it was quite normal for this to recur on more than one occasion yet when the consultant came his opinion was different and told them when sending the report  to GP and opticians that if it occurred again I was to be referred to plastics. I am sure there are a lot of procedures that some staff can do but others that should be left to doctors.

I found this experience extremely difficult and fraught as I think if the consultant had not been available I would have been sent home without having the procedure. Apart from the expense to the NHS of a cancelled appointment and re-arrangement it would have caused me more discomfort and possible damage to my eyes.

Dear Tiger08,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your recent experience. We’re very sorry to hear that your visit caused you distress and left you feeling uncertain about the care you were receiving.

I understand how frustrating and concerning it must have been to have your symptoms initially questioned after receiving a diagnosis from other clinicians. I understand your concern over the discussion to be referred to plastics if there was a reoccurrence of the entropion and the information that would be sent to your gp, this is the normal practice and by this the consultant was referring the the plastic speciality within Ophthalmology.

The team followed the correct procedure in requesting a consultant opinion however, we understand that the uncertainty in the early part of your visit made an already stressful situation more difficult. We aim to provide a high standard of care and try to help our patients to be at ease and understand that this is not how your experience was, and your comments will be shared with the relevant team to ensure learning and improvement.

If you would like to discuss this further please do not hesitate to get in touch

Kind regards

Stacey Arnott
