After been told by two ophthalmologists and an optician that I had entropion I attended an appointment to have a correction procedure. The staff member I saw told me they could not see the problem and told me I probably had a hair in my eye!! However they did say there was a consultant present in the hospital and they would see if he was available to have a look. Fortunately the consultant agreed with the other professionals and advised them to continue. During the procedure the staff member told me I was very tense and my whole body taught. I didn’t say anything to them but it was due to me having no faith in them ability as they had admitted they could see nothing wrong.
I had previously had this procedure done to one eye and they told me when I first arrived that it was quite normal for this to recur on more than one occasion yet when the consultant came his opinion was different and told them when sending the report to GP and opticians that if it occurred again I was to be referred to plastics. I am sure there are a lot of procedures that some staff can do but others that should be left to doctors.
I found this experience extremely difficult and fraught as I think if the consultant had not been available I would have been sent home without having the procedure. Apart from the expense to the NHS of a cancelled appointment and re-arrangement it would have caused me more discomfort and possible damage to my eyes.
"A very stressful experience"
