"Forming new positive beliefs"

About: Adult Psychological Therapies Service / Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

(as the patient),

Fixing broken self-critical standards, and forming new positive beliefs

I had spent a lot of my childhood having a continuous inner battle with myself to be better. I felt fear of judgement if I could not be ‘good enough’. Things could only be done a certain way and I could only talk to certain people that matched the social status I had created of myself in my head. These false beliefs became too overwhelming to live by, but I had no idea how to live differently.

CBT completely changed how I perceived myself and the world around me. I struggled with social anxiety and severe depression, but therapy gave me the tools and skills I needed to cope instead of crumble at the idea of having to overcome a social situation, or even just driving to some place new. My friend circle has changed for the better, I’m surrounded by more like minded individuals who spread positivity, which has influenced my own mood and stance on my life. I would not have been able to do this without CBT, and I’ve learned that it’s okay that I needed help. Not everything can be done on your own, and it doesn’t have to be.

I don’t think therapy should be seen as a sign of weakness or that people who use it are flawed or broken. It’s something that I believe every person should be able to use, whether you feel you need it or not. It has genuinely saved me, and helped me develop new standards for myself that are achievable and also positive. Therapy helps find what motivates you and how you can use that in your everyday life to be the best version of you.
