"My story is about myself"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital Craigavon Area Hospital / Acute Medical Unit (AMU) Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was admitted three days after my husband passed away. I was sitting in a recliner chair waiting my turn in A&E.  I was moved very quickly into a Store and given a trolley to lie on. I was not told much, only I was infectious.

I lay there for two days without anything. I asked a cleaner if I could get something to get washed. They eventually brought me a commode with a sick tray with soapy water in it. I was very sick and had to phone my daughter on my mobile, which I was lucky I had with me.

I was not allowed out of the room at all. I slept in the Store overnight for two nights. I was very distressed, with no one telling me what was going on, plus the fact I was grieving for my husband whom I had looked after for 30 years and he passed away just 3 nights before. I was very upset with no one to talk to just left in a Store Cupboard.

I then was told I had Pneumonia with Stage A Flu. I had no means of washing myself as the sink was broken in the Store Room I was in.  The whole experience was awful for me.

I eventually was transferred up to the Acute Medical Ward where I eventually received wonderful treatment. I was on oxygen for the duration of my time in Hospital.

Unfortunately, the patient beside me passed away and I had to relive the trauma of that all over again after my own husband had passed away 3 days before that.

It was such an awful experience for me but I would say I was well cared for when I was admitted to a ward.

Good evening cruxje99,

I am deeply sorry for the loss of your husband. I can not begin to imagine the pain you have went through when dealing with grief and then this distressing experience in ED.

I want to assure you that this is not the standard of care that we tolerate from our staff in ED and I am shocked to read this post. I apologise that your experience was negative and that the communication was so poor, no patient should be left to feel this way.

It is difficult for me to investigate this without details of your attendance as I can not determine which staff were involved in your care. If you would like to contact me directly on 028 37 561769 I would be more than happy to chat with you and discuss this further.

Thank you for providing this feedback, I hope that you are recovering well.

Sister Jill Green.
