"Discharge process"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Cardiology Royal Victoria Hospital / Pharmacy Trauma & Orthopaedics / Major Trauma Unit (8CC)

(as a service user),

I was told at 1.30 pm I was able to be discharged. At 2.30 I was asked to leave the room but I couldn't leave the hospital because I hadn't got a discharge letter from the doctor. At 5.30 I was still waiting on a chair in the corridor for a discharge letter. I was not seen by a doctor but a discharge letter did arrive. I was told I could leave and come back to collect medication, however this would mean I'd have no pain relief overnight so I waited. My friend who had come to collect me recognised a passing staff member and he was told at 6pm that the medication would be ready in half an hour. At 6.45 I asked again if the medication was ready and was told that it was going to be another half an hour. It is now 7.30pm, I've been sitting on a chair in the corridor since 2.30.

I've been given pain relief just now when my friend asked for me. It's not the fault of the nurses in this ward but if the discharge process takes over 6 hours then I should be left in bed with regular medication until I am actually ready to be discharged. I feel tired, sore, over looked, upset, uncomfortable and that I was asked to leave my bed early to facilitate another patient being admitted. I'm having to keep hounding nursing staff in this ward who have no control over the cardio thoracic department that the doctor is from who was to do my discharge, and no control over the pharmacy. It is even more frustrating that I've been told incorrect information twice about the length of time it's going to take for pharmacy to process my medication ( apparently by the pharmacy themselves) and I can't go and collect the medication, even though it's my prescription in my name because a nurse from this ward has to physically bring the medicine from the pharmacy to the ward sign it in, sign it out and give it to me.

Now it is time for the shift change, so there's no nurses available to collect the medication and bring it to the ward. So I still wait.....the nursing staff have been trying their best but communication between the ward staff, the cardio thoracic doctors and the pharmacy

Good afternoon, my name is Kate Russell and I am the Lead Nurse for the Major Trauma Ward. I am really sorry for this experience that you had at the time of your discharge and I do acknowledge the additional stress and frustration that this had on you - particularly when you were feeling so sore and uncomfortable.

I would like to look into this further to ensure that any learning around your discharge process can be shared with the wider team. Please feel free to contact me on 07385533563 and I would be more than happy to talk this through further with yourself.

Best regards, Kate
