"Everything else during my stay was absolutely amazing"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was so upset & screaming whilst he had to be held down to have his iv connected.

A senior member of staff shouted at my little boy to stop screaming.

As a mother & also working as a health care provider I feel that was unacceptable to shout as it caused my little boy to be way more distressed aswell as myself.

I did report this to a staff member at the time but there was no apology or even an response.

Everything else during my stay was absolutely amazing, the care was outstanding.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I’m truly sorry to hear about the distressing incident involving your son during his IV placement. It is absolutely understandable how upsetting that must have been for both you and your son. I want to sincerely apologise for what you experienced.

We expect all of our staff to treat patients and their families with empathy, patience, and professionalism at all times. I’m very sorry this was not your experience in that moment, and that when you raised it with a member of staff at the time, you did not receive acknowledgment or an apology.

If you feel comfortable, we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you further to better understand the situation and offer our personal apology. Due to the anonymous nature of the feedback, please can you contact me via Jessica.appleby@nhs.net quoting Care Opinion 277852. Should you prefer not to contact me, please be assured I will share your feedback with the team in order to prevent such situations happening in the future.

We are grateful for your kind words about the rest of your stay and the care provided. Your feedback, both the positive and the difficult, helps us improve, and we thank you for bringing this to our attention.
