"feeling like you were forgotten about"

About: Mater Hospital / Ward D

(as the patient),

The care delivered on this ward was shocking. Always feeling like you were forgotten about. Throughout my stay on Ward D, i was in a lot of pain, several times i had to continually remind staff about pain relief, which they just seemed to forget about, one nurse in particular, just seemed to forgot about me, all day.

In addition to this, not much sleep was had throughout my stay. Every day and night, patients were screaming and shouting. And nothing was being done about this.

The only good thing is that the ward was always kept clean (well, most of the time), and the food was good. I understand that staff are busy, but it seems that they need to prioritise patients a bit more

Dear augustpb56

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience while you were a patient on Ward D at the Mater Hospital. My name is Bernie Carey and I am the senior Manager for ward D.

I’m truly saddened to hear that the nurses did not pay enough attention to you, and that you were left to manage on your own — especially while in pain. While Ward D is often very busy, there is no excuse for your pain not being recognised and responded to appropriately. Please accept my sincere apologies.

Noise at night has been recognised as one of our biggest challenges and we are working hard to overcome this. I would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you further about your experience, and to explore how we can improve the care we provide. If you’re willing, please do give me a call on 028 96156172 at a time that suits you.

Thank you also for acknowledging the positive aspects of your stay — particularly that the ward was clean and that the food met your expectations. Feedback like yours, both positive and constructive, is vital in helping us improve.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Bernie
