"Cancer diagnosis, treatment and care"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Breast services Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Gynaecology FAU (Ward 43) Devenish Practice, The Health Centre Treatment rooms / Enniskillen (Erne HC)

(as the patient),

I attended my GP with another issue mentioned - a discharge from my breast (nipple). At the end of the consultation, my GP Dr Mulligan (Devenish Practice Enniskillen) very quickly voiced concerns and referred me to the breast care service in Altnagelvin.

I was seen at clinic within 10  days - mammogram and biopsy done. I had results mid January and surgery mid February. I cannot thank Dr Mulligan and the beast care team enough. Special thanks also goes to my consultant, Mr McIllmun, and beast care nurse Gemma.

Throughout this time, I felt very supported and respected. Mr McIllmun took time to explain results and treatment options, Gemma was also on hand to answer any queries.

On the day of my surgery needless to say I was very anxious and nervous. The dedicated, compassionate care shown towards me by the anaesthetic Dr Callaghan, the PA Beth, nursing staff including student nurse Georgia and health care assistants in ward 43 Altnagelvin was exemplary.

Pre-op the theatre nurses were amazing similarly in recovery - they addressed my pain immediately. I can not thank you all enough for dedicated service, the NHS is a better place with you in it.

Finally I would like to thank the treatment room nurses in Enniskillen.  I had a tiny wound post operatively which they dressed weekly. I was given an appointment and seen promptly- no waiting. I was treated on each occasion with dignity, compassion and respect.

Thankfully my cancer was caught early - stage 1 -  and I am making good progress, thanks largely to the dedicated, professional  and compassionate care I  received.
