"The whole process was very smooth"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Fracture Clinic

(as the patient),

I attended A&E at Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital in June and had my foot x-ray. I was very happy I got this as they referred me to the Fracture Clinic. When I phoned the clinic they said I had an appointment on the system.

I went to the Fracture Clinic. My concern is that I have Schizophrenia and environments like that are very challenging for me to attend. I was left in a room on my own, and I ended up having a meltdown.

But once I explained my condition to staff, they were all very kind and supportive. Dr Krishnan impressed me greatly. I am very satisfied with all their work. And I don't have to go back.

The whole process was very smooth and I am very happy with it as a whole.

I am responsible for monitoring overall service delivery, and the day to day running of both departments. I work closely with the Orthopaedic Consultants, Radiologists, Therapists, Trauma Nurse Practitioners, Orthopaedic Practitioners and Nursing staff to ensure cohesive care is delivered. I am very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff, who work extremely hard to ensure patient safety is maintained, and that clinics run as smoothly as possible.

Dear phaseme76,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent Fracture clinic experience, and apologies that I am only just responding now - I was on Annual leave last week.

I am really sorry to hear that our environment and lack of awareness regarding your condition, resulted in you becoming distressed while you were waiting to be reviewed in clinic.

I am however, very pleased to hear that once you were able to talk to the staff and explain your specific requirements that they were able to make you feel more comfortable.

As a department we try to ensure that we treat all individuals with kindness and compassion, and we appreciate that for some people coming into Hospital can be a challenge in itself due to environmental factors.

I try to encourage as many people as possible to let us know in advance if they have any specific needs whilst attending, such as being accompanied, not closing the examination room door etc as we can then make a note of this on your health care record, and try to limit your exposure to potential stressors.

I will ensure that I pass on your kind feedback to all staff in the department, and I am pleased that you overall felt that the experience was relatively smooth and left you feeling satisfied with the outcome.

I wish you a continued speedy recovery,

Kind regards,

Julia King
