"Feeling judged by staff"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary / Accident and emergency Bradford Royal Infirmary / General surgery

(as the patient),

I went to A&E with an infected abscess (in my genitals, not nice). The staff and nurses that cared for me on the first and second night were nice. While I did have to show a lot of different people, and information about what treatment is received and when was varied and scarce, my symptoms were at least being listened to and documented.

All that changes the moment I went to radiology. The nurse was offhand and the radiologist was constantly judgemental about how I might have picked up the infection, or otherwise dismissive of me.

The surgeon finally arrived later that day, with an assistant, and had not even read the radiologist's results, nor my chart. In the two conversations we had, they seemed to have absolutely no interest in listening to my symptoms, nor in reading about them. I'm not exactly sure how they expected to perform any surgery without knowing anything about the infection.. This turned into an argument. When they left, the assistant also felt the need to add to the radiologist's judgemental attitude and have a dig at me.

I discharged myself and got antibiotics from my GP. I did not need surgery anyway. Somebody also stole my mum's phone charger.

Hi

My name is Catherine and part of my role is responding to posts on Care Opinion.

Apologies for the late response I have been away on leave.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback, I am pleased you felt that the staff and nurses were nice during the first 2 days of your admission, and you felt your symptoms were being listened to and documented.

I am really sorry to hear you felt that the nurse in radiology was offhand and that the radiologist was judgmental and dismissive.

I am sorry you did not feel listened to by the surgeon and their assistant and again had a poor experience.

This is not the care we aim to provide.

It is really difficult to look into this for you without more detail.

In order for us to investigate further, I would encourage you to contact our Patient Experience Service (PALS) on 01274 364810 or by emailing patient.experience@bthft.nhs.uk.

As a Trust we strive to provide a high level of care and patient well being and value all feedback, positive or negative, as a way to drive improvements to our services.

Thank you again for providing your feedback.

Kind regards

Catherine Healy
