"Not listening to the patient"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

After several times calling GP Out of hours and spending 7 (which I was discharged without seeing a doctor because they were calling the wrong name) then 12 hours at the A&E,I was discharged from A&E with viral infection. It turned out that it was bacterial as I have already mentioned before.

The A&E doctor refused to request a scan that could have prevented a sepsis but instead they said that I should be mindful and remember that a scan can be harmful for my body. That led me from an initial light back pain into a pelvic infection that could have been avoided if a scan had been performed.

If I was pregnant it would have costed me my baby’s life. I believe septic shock often happens because doctors don’t listen to the patient’s initial symptoms. And fully trust on what they see on a screen instead of requesting exams that can exclude infections, like a simple culture from urine or vaginal swab.

Dear Microb,

I’m John Barron, Service Manager for Urgent and Emergency Care. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion. I am sorry to read about your experience.

Unfortunately, the entire Health and Social Care System remains under significant pressure and as a result this often results in long wait times. We do strive to treat each patient individually with care and compassion through all stages of their journey in ED. Your experience is not one we would wish for any patient.

We expect our staff to listen with compassion and communicate professionally. Disappointingly on this occasion your experience has not reflected this. This certainly falls short of the high standards of conduct we would expect our staff to consistently uphold.

If you would like to send a confidential message to PatientExperience@belfasttrust.hscni.net with your name, DoB and date of attendance, I would like to investigate your experience further and share your story as a learning point with staff.

Kind regards

John
