"Possible stroke long wait"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I attended Craigavon A & E last night, my face had drooped on 1 side. Initial assessment was good, had CT scan, then I was left in a room from 9.30pm until 11.30pm, I couldn’t wait any longer, I had been up since 6am & done a whole days work. I returned this morning to get CT results & medication, 4 hours & still waiting. So much for time being crucial when it comes to strokes.

Hi

I am unable to investigate your feedback specifically as I have no details. When patients arrive to the ED with stroke systems an initial assessment is completed and they are immediately referred to the stroke team for assessment. I am presuming that was what happened when you presented to the ED. and received your CT scan promptly. I am unsure why there has been a delay in a member of the stoke team communicating with you post this scan. When a CT scan is completed and indicates a stroke which requires lysis treatment, the patient will be admitted to the stroke ward very quickly for treatment of their stroke.

I wish to apologize that I cant provide any more information for your experience with out any more detail.

Thank you for providing your feedback

Stacey

Hi,

I am so sorry to hear about your experience. We know that any visit to a hospital can be stressful in addition to not feeling well. You are right, it is very important that a Person with a Stroke is identified quickly as this can guide which treatment is available.

Once the Stroke Team are notified we try our best to ensure that all Patients are reviewed as a matter of urgency.

I would be happy to help with your concerns, if you would like to contact me via email on james.gilpin@southerntrust.hscni.net

Thanks,

James
