"Lack of empathy and care"

About: Galloway Community Hospital / Accident & Emergency Galloway Community Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

Shameful lack of empathy and care from one doctor and some nurses! I was admitted with a stress induced condition which was not treated properly before I was prematurely discharged without any medication or aftercare that could have prevented my relapse and readmission, after then spending an agonising day and night suffering and getting into a state of suicidal despair at the lack of care and amount of suffering I was having to endure, I called 999 and was then brought back in and kept in overnight.

On being discharged, I was then shamed by a nurse about my living circumstances, which are not ideal but nor are they of my choosing. I clearly have lanyard showing I am disabled and have anxiety. These were ignored. I fell twice while in the hospital and both times was accused of throwing myself to the floor. I should have been offered a chair instead of forced to struggle when clearly weak, but was left to fall then told I had done it on purpose and while on the floor having a panic attack and sweating being surrounded by nurses and the same Dr who did the same when discharged me before.

I can appreciate that this hospital is very underfunded, but I should not be having this taken out on me  I literally feel like going away and ending it all after my experience here again. This was not a caring place for me and the staff most of who I met have been less than caring. My experience left me feeling suicidal and worthless.

Dear Cat999,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am so sorry to read of the experience and for the understandable upset and distress this has caused you. No one should ever feel dismissed or unsafe when seeking care, especially during such a vulnerable time.

I note your concerns regarding the lack of care and empathy shown to you during your admissions to the Galloway Community Hospital for a stress-induced condition and note that feeling unheard, being discharged without proper support, and experiencing judgment and neglect is concerning. It’s completely understandable that this has left you feeling overwhelmed and upset.

I note from your experience that you may be having suicidal thoughts, and we are keen to understand and support you with these. If you are currently working with the Mental Health Team, we would recommend you contact your Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN) and/or the Crisis Team if required. Alternatively, you can contact your GP or 111/999 if you feel urgent support is needed. I have provided a link below that we hope you might find useful:

I am keen to investigate your concerns further so that we can better understand what happened and identify any learning and support. I would be grateful if you could please reach out to our team, if you feel comfortable doing so. That would allow us to look into this further and ensure that we can provide you with any additional support as appropriate.

Our team can be reached by email at dg.patientservices@nhs.scot or by telephone on 01387 272733. The team are aware of your Care Opinion story and will be happy to support you in any way they can.

If you do not feel able to contact us directly, or if you feel that you would benefit from extra assistance providing feedback, you can receive free, independent advice and support from the Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS). More information on their service can be found at https://pass-scotland.org.uk/.

Thank you once again for taking the time to share your feedback. I hope that you feel able to reach out to our team so that we can support you further.

Kind regards

Jamie
