After a workplace injury I had laser treatment for a Torn Retina at Hairmyres, but this progressed into a Detached Retina where I was referred to Gartnavel to see Dr Hind. I was admitted the next day for emergency Vitrectomy surgery.
I will be honest I was pretty anxious as it was performed under local anaesthetic but my fears were put to bed from the moment I entered Surgical Admissions.
All the nurses here were great where my mind was put at ease and I was offered refreshments while I waited on my turn for theatre. Once I was in theatre the anaesthetist was genuinely a star (I’m sorry I’ve forgotten her name as there were so many people dealing with me), but as said she was fantastic at putting me at ease even offering a hand to hold!
Dr Hind and her colleagues met me and again I was put at ease. The only part of the surgery that was uncomfortable was the anaesthetic into the eye, on a scale of one to ten this was a four pain wise for a few seconds. After this I never felt anything other than light touching as the surgeons were working on me. The actual surgery was finished in 30 minutes and I was taken to Ward 1c where again all the nurses/staff were great.
Once I had postured for 4 hours I was allowed home after my aftercare was explained in detail (eye drops, do’s and don’t etc). I have a follow up appointment in 14 days to see how the surgery is healing.
So I hope this not only reassures anyone in a similar position as I was, but I also hope this reaches the staff that were involved in my treatment as I genuinely owe them for their dedication and care.
Thank you.
