"My son's experience"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Paediatrics wards (19 & 20)

(as a parent/guardian),

Great paediatric wards, staff were understanding and helpful towards my son, Ward 20 was set up to help families with a bed to stay at your child's side and tea, coffee etc. My son's care at the time was great, however 9 days post-op, my son had to visit his GP and GP was unaware of any hospital admission due to no discharge letter being received by the hospital. This hasn't been sent in post, sent electronically or even given to myself on discharge. My son's GP is working on half information and what I can provide, I hope this does not impact my son's health in any way, as he has new symptoms and the GP can't link this to any discharge letter so he could be missing a piece of the puzzle.

I phoned ward 20 and was told they would ask doctor about this and to phone back in a few days if this isn't done. I just hope in the meantime my son's symptoms aren't related to something in the discharge letter!

I can't speak about other people's care, but while in the ward but I can speak on how it impacted us. We spent 2 days and nights listening to older child screaming in horrific pain and crying out help me, my son then asking if that would happen to him and what was happening, it was scary. Where was the privacy, dignity and respect for this young person to be in a bay of 6?

I was then asked night 2 at 2am if I would like my son to move, he was settled and asleep at this point so why would I distress an autistic child who was asleep after having surgery, would it not have been more respectful to move the older child than move the 3 children and families having to listen to the poor child scream in horrific pain all day and night?

Good afternoon Izzy84JJ

Thank you for sharing your experience while your son was an inpatient in Ward 20 following surgery. This will have been a very worrying time for you and we really appreciate the positive feedback you have given for the ward and staff involved in your son's care. I will let staff know - they are always pleased to hear this! However, I also note the impact that another child's distress has had and will ensure this is shared with staff to consider future care within the ward.

I'm keen to try and assist with the issue around the discharge letter. To allow me to look into this further, I need some patient details. If you would like to contact me directly, I can take those details and look into on your behalf. My telephone number is 07740023507. I will be available today (Thursday) until 5pm then back in the office on Monday 16th June and available after 11.30am.

Kind regards

Julie
