"Stay in hospital after an accident"

About: Lady Home Hospital University Hospital Wishaw / General Surgery

(as a service user),

After a fall in the garden an ambulance was called and was then taken to Wishaw general hospital where after having an xray on the knee, the duty doctor explained that where the fracture was I would need to be admitted into the hospital and at their morning meeting they would discus a way forward with an operation and I consented to this.  In the ward was confined to bed as no weight bearing on right leg.  At doctors round it was decided that it would be a below the knee surgeon that would be required to operate and they were trying to locate one.  After a week in bed was told that the knee would be operated on the next day.  Back in bed again for recovery, and a few days later was helped up to sit on a chair, then getting me to stand up to transfer onto a chair and to use the toilet and shower facilities

I found this a great challenge and a painful process too.  The nursing teams on ward 16 were exemplary , caring and diligent as well as very good company. The downside of my stay at Wishaw general hospital was the appalling food.

After 2 weeks I was then transferred to lady home hospital in Douglas.  Again to begin with I was confined to bed for 2/3 days as no weight bearing on right leg.  The care given in this hospital came across more , as a much smaller place where nothing was too much bother and the care was exemplary .  I was at times told that the next day I would be doing/ attempting some sort of movement and then nothing happened for a good few days and I found that disappointing.Nurses went out of their way to help or find out information.  But oh my goodness I don’t know who decided on the food and daily menus that was the worse part for me.  After every meal, that’s when I had one, I was ill and it lasted for days only to recur when having to eat again, whoever decided on the ready frozen meals needs to do a rethink as there was no nutrition , no thought nothing fresh , it was awful. Thank goodness every member of staff in that little hospital were professional and caring and having the patients best interests as  I know their encouragement helped me immensely .

Dear serpensbd97,

Thank you for sharing your experience as an inpatient at Lady Home Hospital. I’m delighted to hear that the care you received was exemplary and provided reassurance throughout your recovery.

I realise that the delay in starting your rehabilitation therapy may have been disappointing, and therefore I am sorry for any inconvenience this caused. I will discuss with the Allied Health Professional team to understand what happened and explore ways to make the experience smoother for future patients.

I am sorry that the food quality and variety didn’t meet your expectations. I understand how important good nutrition is during recovery, and I will pass your feedback along to our catering colleagues so they can consider ways to improve the options available.

Your kind words about the hospital staff are truly appreciated, and I will make sure your positive feedback is shared with them. They will be delighted to know that their professionalism and compassion provided comfort and support during your stay.

Thank you once again for taking the time to share your experience which helps us improve our services. I hope your recovery continues to progress well and that your rehabilitation journey at home after your knee surgery is going smoothly.

Kind regards

Maureen
