"Left me embarrassed and ashamed"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Attending A&E recently on advice from NHS call line triage nurse asked me why I was there, I advised I had high blood pressure and they took my blood pressure told me it was better than theirs, and that I should not attend there for this as this is a GP problem, I apologised and said I will go to GP if this becomes problematic, they then said I should call NHS line if things get worse, however this is what I had done on the day.

This interaction left me embarrassed and ashamed as I was not trying to use valuable resources, I will never attend again unless unconscious, this is why we need the assisted dying bill, I feel there is no care out there.

Dear Din31

Thank you for taking time to share your feedback regarding your recent attendance to A&E. I am sorry that you were made to feel ambarassed and ashamed regarding your presentation. That is not the standard of care and communication that I would expect and I offer sincer apologies.

You have advised that you attended following advice from the NHS call line. I wonder if you can contact me directly with your details so that I can look into this further. There may be learning from various teams in terms of referral pathways. However this does not detract from how you were made to feel in the A&E department.

I will share your comments with the A&E team so they can reflect on communication.

If you need to attend the A&E department, I hope you will do so as it is important for all of us to feel comfortable to access services when required.

I hope to hear from you soon

Kind regards

Lise
