"GRI SAU - ongoing experience with Functional Chronic Abdominal Pain,"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Surgical Assessment Unit

(as a service user),

I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing to share my ongoing experience with Functional Chronic Abdominal Pain, which began in late August 2024. Over the past several months, I have seen multiple GPs across different practices,

I have also attended the Surgical Assessment Unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary on nine occasions due to severe abdominal pain, but unfortunately, I still do not have clear answers or relief.

At this point, I feel increasingly anxious and disheartened. I sometimes hesitate to return to the GP, as it feels like I am being sent in circles—often back to the hospital without progress.

I have been on the waiting list for a Gastroenterology referral since the end of January 2025, and have not yet received an appointment or update.

I’m not seeking specific action at this stage, but I wanted to formally document my experience in case it becomes relevant in future.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Dear ShaunB

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I’m very sorry to hear about the ongoing challenges you’ve been facing with your abdominal pain, and I appreciate how difficult and disheartening this must be for you.

While I understand you’re not seeking specific action at this stage, I would encourage you to continue engaging with your GP, especially if your symptoms worsen or change. Your GP remains best placed to reassess your condition and escalate care if needed.

Unfortunately, waiting times for Gastroenterology referrals are currently longer than we would like. I understand how frustrating this delay can be, particularly when you are in ongoing discomfort. If you feel your condition is deteriorating or becoming unmanageable, please do not hesitate to return to your GP or seek urgent care.

Thank you
